It's much faster to parse a graphical schematic sheet than a page of dense code. Maybe a better question is "why is source code not more graphical"?

Osh Stencils sells cool little 'L' pieces of 0.062" thick plastic that are useful for this. I tape them to a table around a board and then use that to hold the board in place. Next I tape the stencil down and align it. But some type of precise jig would be helpful.
