This is the possibly impossible project to read every X-Men comic in publication order from issue 1 to the current issues.

*What counts as an X-Men comic? - I'll be using my own judgement on solo series and spin-offs, while reading all the core books.
So, that's the end of the Stan Lee era. And when I first read the original run I was very hard on it. Reading through again I can see more things to appreciate but the flaws are still very much there.

Issue 20! This is the final issue written by Stan Lee (though his fingerprints will be visible over the comic for a while) and I'll have some things to say about that.

Issue 19! The Mimic is a pretty interesting character (perhaps better known for the Exiles comic) and it's interesting to see him as early as this.

Issue 18! I'll be glad when the X-Men get more varied outfits, because the default balaclava that makes them look like they don't have ears isn't great.

Issue 17! This is a pretty neat cover but you only get to pull this shit once.

Issue 16! We're not in the Death Is Cheap era of X-Men yet, so it's pretty obvious which named character will sacrifice themselves. Let's pretend we don't know so we won't hurt the comic's feelings.

Issue 15! This and several future issues are going to include origin stories at the back (though they'll stop before getting to Jean). This is great because we haven't had much in the way of origins so far, and because every issue so far has had several pages of padding.

Issue 14! X-Men has graduated to a monthly comic, and celebrates with its first three-parter. The introduction of an iconic villain group like the Sentinels right after the Juggernaut shows how smart taking a break from constant Magneto issues was.

Issue 13! How are the X-Men and some flamey guy going to deal with the Juggernaut?

Issue 12 is the best episode of the original run by a mile, and it's hard to say why since it's still Stan Lee writing. This one is a genuinely tense and multi-threaded story.

Issue 11! Stan Lee is very much a man of big ideas and not fine details so this is the one where there's a mysterious stranger and it turns out he's an alien.

Issue 10! This one will be of special interest to Marvel Transformers fans because it introduces the Savage Land, a prehistoric land below Antarctica where the Dinobots first got their saurian alt modes. Oh and here's Ka-Zar, I guess.

Issue 9! Going up against the Avengers really showcases how unbalanced the X-Men's powers are. Cyclops is potentially very powerful (though it's more tell than show) and Iceman is a chilly Green Lantern and then others have powers like "wings" and "backflips"

Issue 8! Yeah, it's pretty daft that just after a Blob story finishes another villain shows up whose power is imperviousness but this one is almost interesting. There's no appearance by Magneto for starters!

Issue 7! I don't know if it's fair to call these comics repetitive when in real life they were coming out two months apart which is plenty of time for the target audience of kids to forget the specifics of the previous story. At least they got the colours right on Wanda this time.

Issue 6! I believe this is the first issue to include an element from outside the X-Men comics, and normally I'm not a fan of external required reading but in this case it's a diversion from ANOTHER fight against Magneto and the Brotherhood.

Issue 5! Maybe there would be a little more surprises and suspense if this wasn't the third fight against Magneto in five issues. And the cover artist still didn't get the memo about Scarlet Witch's outfit not being green.

Issue 4! If Stan Lee was good at anything it was throwing concepts at a wall to see what sticks, which is how we get Quicksilver, Toad, Mastermind and, um, the Emerald Witch all in one episode.

Issue 3! Threatened by The Blob, Iceman has no choice but to fling a buttplug at him.

The first issue, though not great art did a great job of establishing the characters and setting, as well as some smaller world-building elements like how Angel hides his wings. So of course issue 2 will introduce an iconic antagonist.

The original X-Men series is a bit of an oddity, lasting only 66 issues before going into reprints. Notably when this issue came out Fantastic Four were only on issue 19 and Spider-Man only on issue 5, while Avengers #1 came out the same month.
