“My hero,” Chuuya snorted, but glanced up to him with the same wide grin. Amber and brown were looking back to him and he felt a slight shiver going through his spine. Suddenly, his mouth felt so dry. “Chuuya owes me now, I think,” Osamu murmured. It was hard to really tell from his position, but was he staring at Chuuya’s lips? “Do I, now? What do you want this time?” he mumbled back in an uncharacteristically soft tone. He could feel his heart racing again and his hands starting to sweat. What exactly was happening here? “Can’t Chuuya tell?” Osamu’s voice was a little teasing and he raised an eyebrow, but his lips curled into a small smile. The tingling in Chuuya’s stomach multiplied by ten. Hundred. Thousand. It was in his entire body, now. He didn’t know what was going on anymore. Was Osamu coming closer? When had Chuuya lifted his head off his shoulder?

Chuuya had asked Dazai once how many times he thought you could break a person before they stopped trying to put themselves back together, stopped trying to pick up the pieces and left themselves shattered. Depends how cruel you are, Dazai had answered after a long moment, you can still break pieces. Chuuya is pieces and his edges are sharp.

THE RAW EMOTIONS IN THIS I’M GOING INSANE
Dazai laughs. He won’t say it again, Chuuya knows. He would still like to hear it though. He would like if, just once, Dazai would say what he means and say it clearly. He would like if what Dazai means is that he wants Chuuya the way Chuuya wants him. It’s hard to tell with Dazai. This could be a fleeting idea he had two days ago and he’s now perseverating on. It could be a desire that he’s held close and quiet for years. Chuuya will never know. Chuuya would like to know though. To hear Dazai say something like he wants Chuuya. That he missed Chuuya. That he regretted it. That he should have at least come to Chuuya, covered in someone else’s blood, and said goodbye. Chuuya would like Dazai to say that he needs Chuuya even a fraction of the way Chuuya needs him. Chuuya has resigned himself to not being needed the way he needs. To not being wanted the way he wants. Still though. He’s only human.

Oh this SHATTERED me I hate (love) when authors make SKK become close JUST right before Dazai’s defection
Chuuya feels himself crack, a thread-thin line. He takes another drag and then leans forward to blow a steady stream of smoke into Dazai’s mouth. Dazai inhales sharply. Their mouths are very close. Chuuya makes sure they don’t touch. Chuuya’s kissed Dazai before, a hesitant strange little thing. Dazai left five days after their lips touched. It’s not related. Chuuya’s never forgiven himself for it.

Chuuya inhales, exhaling the smoke toward the ceiling as he leans back. Neither of them speak. Chuuya drinks, takes another long drag. He holds the cigarette lightly between his fingers, ashes it without purpose. “Give me some.” Dazai says quietly and leans forward, opens his mouth. They used to do this when they were younger— share smoke, share space. It’s been a thousand years since Chuuya was young enough and stupid enough to do something like that and pretend he wasn’t craving closeness, possibility, the faint warmth of Dazai’s skin, his mouth.

He tucks the edge of Dazai’s bandage back around his wrist, tugging to make sure it’s tight before he folds it in on itself. Dazai blinks up at him, seemingly disarmed, before he smiles beguilingly, falsely. He pulls his arm back to his chest. His gaze slips past Chuuya.

He watches as Dazai, in the edges of his vision, flops back against the couch. There’s a fluidity to the loose way his limbs land and scatter. It makes Chuuya want to draw him together, hold him inside his lines. Something about Dazai always makes Chuuya want to do that. He wants to touch, wants Dazai to be here because he needs Chuuya, needs Chuuya to trace the lines of him and make him solid. Chuuya, he wants Dazai to say, and then look at him with something like hunger. Uselessly, endlessly, Chuuya pretends he is needed. He digs his teeth into his tongue. He steadies his breath, counting silently, and waits.

But, Dazai was the boss. He called the shots. So, after changing his outfit at home and grabbing his gear, Chuuya had found himself in the position of the stupid old clock tower that had perfect sight to Piano Man’s apartment. His sniper rifle was ready in his hands, he had his eyes glued on the target’s vicinity and he had a stupid mobile phone with him, headset connected to it and on the line with— “Hey, Elizabeth, how are you?~” Dazai purred into the phone. Chuuya didn’t need to be there to see the satisfied smirk and the amused glint in his brown eye. He rolled his own eyes, but while they were still staring through the scope of the rifle, he replied in his best rich aerugon girl impression, “Oh, Osamu, how nice of you to call me!” A delightful snicker was on the other end, the obnoxious smile /audible/. “Well, I missed your lovely voice, so how could I not?~” /This fucker was enjoying himself too fucking much./

He finished filling out a report and lifted the paper, already on the next document as he grumbled, “Yo, Iceman—” Iceman’s brown eyes twinkled in amusement as he took it. “The Colonel is letting his work pile up again, huh? Do you need help?” “Help strangling him for shoving all of /this/ to me.” Chuuya didn’t even look up, but could very well imagine the sympathetic look he got. What he heard though was Albatross snorting right next to him which Chuuya was not afraid to reward with a glare. “Hey, don’t look at me like this! I’m already handling the entire Yoki-case for ya, ain’t I?” he grinned and even pushed his sunglasses up to wink at him. “After I /gave/ it to you, ya fuckin’—”

Chuuya is 18 when he comes back from a mission in Europe and he is being pulled into an interrogation room because this fucking waste of space has defected. He has /left/. And now Chuuya has to pick up the mess he has left behind. And Chuuya hates the way it stings when he swears up and down he knows nothing about the shitty bastard’s whereabouts or plans, never knew about them in the first place because it’s clear that everyone had expected something else and— yeah. Yeah. Chuuya had, too. The pain of betrayal is cutting through his blood and when he finally leaves the interrogation room he heads straight home and opens this damned Petrus and gets drunk. To celebrate his freedom, of course. And if he smashes the empty bottle later against a wall and still finds no satisfaction in it and starts to scream because he expects someone to walk through his door and that someone isn’t coming, it isn’t anyone’s fucking business. It’s a few days after, when Chuuya learns the reason why Dazai has left and now he’s mad because he can’t even fucking be angry at the bastard anymore. He was furious after his fucking car blew up, but now there’s nothing left of it as he learns that Dazai’s friend has died as result of the Boss’s scheme. Chuuya lights up a cigarette as he sits on his balcony and stares into the night. There’s no one to be angry at because the Boss did what he had to do and Dazai did what was right for him after what happened to his friend, so now Chuuya has to deal with this suffocating feeling of sadness. He wishes people would stop leaving, one way or another.

Still, he couldn’t help himself as his smile shifted to match his teasing tone, “It’s not an easy path, where I’m going. Not exactly bright either. Are you sure you want to follow me?” /Are you sure that I’m worth it, are you sure you don’t want to back out while you still can?/ There was not a single moment of hesitation. Chuuya’s eyes flashed up with firm resolution as he set his own glass aside to drag his right arm behind his back while the other was lifted to a salute. When he spoke, his voice was filled with pure resolution that left not a single drop of doubt, “If you wish, I will follow you into the depths of hell.”

Chuuya’s gun was pulled up and he shot before she even fully entered the room as he positioned himself between the woman and Gin. It only grazed her and he stared blankly back. “That was a warning. Next time it won’t just leave a scratch.” Just… that it didn’t leave a scratch, the wound immediately began to close. Shit. Chuuya didn’t allow that fact to break his poker face though, instead he grabbed his second gun. “Stay back, kid.” “Lieutenant, I don’t think—” “You sure feel full of yourself just like your little Colonel, huh? It’s a shame, really, that it had to end like this. He could have been useful.” Chuuya’s blood froze and he grit his teeth as he stepped forward, his voice filled with searing anger as he growled, “Where the fuck is he and what have you done?”
