It was the site of draft riots during the civil war, center of the anarchist and socialist movements in the 20's and 30's, home to many of the notable Beat writers and poets, and the birthplace of the Yippies (Youth International Party) in 1967. The East Village's legacy as a center of social and polítical innovation is continued today by its many experimental theatres, performance and visual artists, and by groups such as the Green Guerrillas (promoting intensive urban gardening) and Transportation Alternatives (pioneer advocates of car-free cities and pedestrian/bicyclist rights).
