Why I’m Not at ASA (and might not be anytime soon) 1. Finances: thanks to anti-migrant policies UK higher education is in crisis. So my faculty only confirmed we will have our personal research allowances mid-November * I cannot afford to pay to fly from London to Puerto Rico out of pocket 2. Disability : I still have long covid. Even if I could afford to fly, there are no direct flights. A few years ago I flew direct London to LA for C19 conference and I was bed-ridden for most of my time and it triggered additional conditions that took me the rest of the year to recover from with additional prescription medications 3. ASA policy: they say being no-show will reflect negatively on future conference participation. I contacted ASA months ago to explain my dilemmas with funding and my health in relation to conference registration. They couldn’t give me any assurances that I wouldn’t be penalized for not being able to register or attend. So given these factors it will be very hard for me to attend ASA in the future: 1. Finances: Because the political situation in the UK isn’t going to get better anytime soon — the left is working on it ofc — so financial problems at UK universities also won’t 2. Timing: it seems like confirming research funds will now usually take until November. So I would need to apply to ASA the year prior not knowing if I’ll be able to attend/find colleagues willing to organize with me knowing I might not be able to attend 3. ASA policy: I might be penalized for non-attendance due to the aforementioned reasons anyway

The Routledge Companion to Queer Literary Studies in cerulean hardback against a cushion with a royal blue and gold octopus Chapter 3 UNFEELINGS THAT MATTER On Unfeeling as Queer Literary Heuristic Xine Yao Take unfeeling as a challenge from below, rather than as oppression from above. From this princi- ple, I lay out three key interventions about the cultural politics of unfeeling: 1 “I reconsider unfeeling as an index of the underacknowledged spectrum of dissonance and dis- sent that critiques the demands of sympathetic recognition shaped by sentimentalism, question- ing the liberal project of inclusion”; 2 “I explore unfeeling, in both the responsive and demonstrative senses, as a quotidian tactic of survival and a counterintuitive, and sometimes counteractive, mode of care”; 3 “I propose that these antisocial affects are vilified as unfeeling because they have insurgent potential that may not be legible or instrumentalized . . . we may consider disaffection to be the unfeeling rupture that enables new structures of feeling to arise. In other words, the reading of unfeeling as oppositional negation functions as a defensive denial of the quick- ening, flourishing, and renewal of alternative forms of sociality made possible by feeling otherwise.” The clarity of this sequence is a deceptive conceit which elides the affective and disaffective messiness of these theoretical claims arising out of my situated theory in the flesh. In what follows I share four meditations on unfeeling as queer literary heuristic, posed as responses to the question “Why unfeeling?” These meditations can be read and understood in any order. I invite you to consider these short reflections in terms of meaning, methodology, and expression—and to speculate as to why I have presented them in this sequence. I write to you still benumbed. 4 Why unfeeling? I don’t care No. Maybe. Not now. Not to you.

Description: While the nineteenth century has long represented an important historical starting point for the study of Asian America, the field of Asian American studies largely remains focused on twentieth- and twenty-first century developments. In nineteenth-century American studies, analyses of the literature and experiences of people of Asian descent has similarly registered as a marginal concern, despite the fact that path-breaking works on these topics have productively complicated our understanding of the era’s racial politics and cultural production. Addressing these patterns of neglect, this C19 virtual panel seeks to reinforce scholarly networks first established at past C19 conference seminars and spotlight research, teaching, and community-building practices among scholars of Asian America in the long nineteenth century.
