🧵 Panel CAM-6: Negotiating Gender Identities through Community Media Practices

we analyze Reddit data about mother-daughter family talk surrounding menstrual product choices. We explore how maternal authority, cultural nationalism, and religious ideologies intersect to regulate menstrual practices, reinforce both menstrual stigma and hymen myths.

We’ve just received a robust agenda and extensive reading list—I’m already looking forward to all that I’ll learn. Deepest thanks to the organizers and sponsors for supporting this vital space for reflection, growth, and community.

This opportunity marks a meaningful beginning to my upcoming RA work at the Center for Communication and Democratic Engagement (CDE), and I’m especially excited to connect with fellow scholars and practitioners in the broader Civically Engaged Research (CER) community.

Our department hosted a ‘solid’ post-conference at CU Boulder Main Campus on “Ethnography of Communication: Affirming and Reshaping the Tradition.” It was an amazing opportunity to connect with scholars in LSI and ethnographic traditions.

We examined how CDTSs (Crossdressers and Transsexuals) in Chinese cyberspace combat online hate speech through their ways, particularly as their identities only could live in socially grey spaces.

I also had the opportunity to present a research project—funded by the Wuhan LGBTQ+ Center, China—on the ICA Intergroup Communication panel. This project is one of my M.A. research works.

I was honored to participate in the @ica-lsi.bsky.social Research Escalator Session with my advisor Dr. Leah Sprain. It was my first time engaging in this format, and I found it incredibly helpful for the manuscript we’re developing.

Even in the brief 10–15-minute presentations, I learned so much from the brilliance and generosity of others' works. Deep thanks to colleagues who showed up to my panel—your support means the world!

Returning to Wuhan University, my alma mater and the place where my academic path began, felt like coming home. ✨

We explored public opinion, political communication, and gendered discourse within the Chinese context.

I‘m also deeply grateful to Dr. Tianyang Liu (Assoc. Prof) for mentoring me through some of the works we collaborated on. I’ve learned so much from both of them.

This achievement would not have been possible without the generous guidance and support of my supervisor, Dr. Tianru Guan (Assoc. Prof). Our co-authored works have been published in Digital Journalism, Asian Journal of Communication, and China: An International Journal!
