Got to meet one of the main producers (and a frequent collaborator of Kaufman) recently and it was fascinating speaking to him about how challenging it was to raise the budget, let alone from a major production studio.

Gerwig is of course a great launching point but with Daniel Kaluuya and Lena Dunham both attached to develop projects, it shows some sort of artistic intent that can be easy to ignore.

I will admit though, launching 14 projects after 1 success(no matter how major)is definitely excessive and risky.

Only saying this now because there is a very particular non-theatrical release this week that includes grain, scratches and even cigarette burns but was shot 100% digitally. Although the crew were keen, and it was within the budget, the studio they worked with don’t like projects shot on film.
