Wilbuforce is a tribute to the British MP who led the movement to ban slavery in the UK.
I am Sparticus!

Reported to be the response from the assembled protesters against slavery in the Roman empire.

Slavery has been rejected in our America for over 150 years.

That same thinking used to constrain going after your political or cultural enemies--unless you are convinced that you will always be in power. Those in charge now seem to be telling us that they always expect to be in power.

One argument against doing away with the filibuster is that it is a valuable tool for the Senate minority to control a majority that needs opposition. So don't kill the filibuster--we might need it for us when the wind changes.

I'm imagining a big horse, terrified at some imagined threat, running down the street, trampling everything in its way, until it collapses in exhaustion, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Battered people. Battered everything. No one can stop it. We can only pick up after it. Mourn the dead

Habeus corpus -- "you have the body" A question. A writ of habeus corpus is an order to produce the prisoner for judicial review. So in two ways we are asking the jailer to bring forth the prisoner in person but also to present evidence of a crime. If you are charged with murder, where is the body?

Andor (Star Trek spinoff) has a story line that has people arrested for no reason, sentenced to extreme punishment in a place resembling a Savadorian prison with no way out. 2022. Uncanny.

Lincoln Steffens. The Shame of the Cities. We need a modern generation of muckrakers to wake us up.

Secure Act new savings plan?
Baby bonds? Where does the money come from if taxes don't increase. Take away Medicaid? Finance new savings programs that invest in market funds? Wall street makes out even if management is "low cost". Looks like redistribution up rather than down to me.

US Social Security system is not a Ponzi scheme!

Do other countries rely on general revenue collections for old age pensions? That is the only way I can make sense of the contention that an ageing work force and low birth rate automatically challenges those pensions.

The limit or wage base this year is 176,000. If we extent Trump 1 tax cuts I would argue it is only fair to increase the wage base enough to fully fund Social Security. Social Surity payments in the US are an earned benefit not a gift of an entitlement.

Please tell me about "old age pensions" in other countries. Social security payments in the U S are paid for largely by worker contributions and employer contributions (a form of deferred pay). There is income redistribution to the extent that benefits have less utility for the rich.

200 years before the American Revolution French history tells us that different agencies of government had essentially their own armies. In our constitutional republic we have agreed that the coercive power of police and armies must be limited by the Constitution and not maintained separately.

Depotations aren't unprecedented. The "Trail of Tears" and the "Long Walk" were just two examples. Compare and contrast anyone?

I was told that German machine gunners were taught to shoot low at the legs of on coming American troops because buddies would help the wounded to get help in the rear. Instead of killing one soldier, possibly three would be removed from action. True or not, I would rather be a helper.

First they came for women. Then they came for transpeople. Then they came for gays. Then they came for the press. Then they came for lawyers. Then they came for judges. Then they came for tax paying immigrants. And foreign students. And the disabled.

Will they come for you or me next?
