the vague idea is just that there'd be a prolonged 'accepting fertilization' period where genetic material is accepted & once fertilization happens, through some kinda selection that ends with a coherent final genome, (haven't coded that part yet so i'm not sure how i'd do it exactly) it's fixed

yeah, there's multiple pigment genes, though they're all used in very simple "adjust skin color by this amount" ways. there's currently nothing epigenetic at all b/c there's no external landscape that could possibly activate anything, tho that would be neat if/when i actually use this for anything.
