Whenever I see posts about Christine Jorgensen I always see people lament her as a lost matyr for a time where trans people were seen as respected. This works to create a sanitized version of trans history that ignores that psychoanalysts were dropping articles like this in 1957.

Jesse she literally says in the article that this is a "false pretense". Nowhere is she claiming the blame game and scapegoating non-binary people.
This is not to say that the plaintiffs in Skrmetti would have prevailed if they had made originalist arguments. There is no way to know. But Frances Thompson left us an unflinching challenge to the false pretense that transition is a recent invention, that it requires modern medical legitimacy for its legality, and that transgender rights can only be an elite interest. Indeed, it was not lost on me, the coauthor of an amicus brief to the court submitted by U.S. historians, that our findings were entirely ignored, both in oral arguments and written opinions. Our brief detailed the long and uncontroversial history of transitioning sex through surgery and hormones is in this country and worldwide, refuting the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals's core holding that they are "novel" and "experimental." There is no doubt that the majority opinion and conservative concurrences would have had a difficult time confronting the facts of history.

The Gay Activist Alliance (GAA) actually had the manner of Chris referred to them in one of their meetings. Both Sylvia and Arthur were in GAA so it's hard to tell who brought Chris up. However, I've searched through the available files of the GAA legal committee and wasn't able to find Chris.

Over the years I have seen this article on Chris Thompson, a black trans feminine person who was forcibly incarcerated in the Bellevue, pop up a few times. Chris has largely only been known through this Gay Flames article until of something I found recently.

But everyone tells me that here you can file for a lawyer; they can't send you to the state hospital... they have to give me some welfare assistance.
