Religion was invented because of deep biases built into the human brain--assigning agency to everything that happens

Nothing to do with the stars

I bet this person is a parent. Nearly all parents are just unable to accept that things will get bad. Their brains would break down at the idea of being responsible for bringing a kid into a world about to become a hellhole. Which it is.

If nicely presenting facts to people would change their minds, the world would be a paradise!

I could give this person 100 authoritative links about how bad things will be even under median scenarios, and they would still be optimistic (they also wouldn't read the link).

LOL people like you are why we're fucked. Hope you don't have kids! bye

You're gonna have a really unpleasant awakening soon.

Spend a few minutes educating yourself about the impending AMOC collapse. That alone will probably be enough to destroy the world economy and send things spiralling.

Don't even have to get to 3C for that to happen.

3 degrees is right in the middle of the range of outcomes for 2100 and that means the end of civilization.

Have fun with your optimism party though!

Still not remotely fast enough to avoid the worst scenarios for climate change

People here see a few % uptick in solar panels or whatever and think that everything is going to be great. Nope!

They're raw numbers, not rates. Which means that for some of these cities (Newark for sure--I didn't check the others), murder rates are actually higher now than in whatever year the chart listed.

health care. environmental issues. trans rights. industrial policy.

Basically everything the dems have done post-Clinton was gop light.
December 23, 2025 at 4:02 PM
The Streisand Effect is going to be renamed the CECOT effect after this.
December 23, 2025 at 12:26 AM
The need to be bipartisan among dems is pathological.
December 22, 2025 at 4:17 PM
Nearly all elected Dems are liberals, not leftists, so it fits.
December 22, 2025 at 4:07 PM
Democrats do this, too. It's their primary excuse for not doing shit every time they're in power.
December 22, 2025 at 3:59 PM
Withholding vaccines is child abuse, too.
December 22, 2025 at 3:26 PM
Other than politics (which currently favors dems since R's are in power), there are literally no downsides to higher beef prices.

20% of global carbon emissions come from animal ag. Half of US cropland goes to feed livestock. This all sucks.
December 21, 2025 at 6:08 PM
Didn't Obama say that after the ACA he didn't have enough "political capital" left to get a climate Bill passed? This despite Pelosi getting a pretty good bill though the House

I spent a lot of time campaigning for Obama and it feels like a total waste now.

Yeah, I was actually trying to remember Ed's name when I wrote that. His stuff was excellent.

Okay, everyone but Ed.

Has any Atlantic writer ever been right about anything?

If you want to read a 250-page version of that argument, this book is very good: bookshop.org/p/books/a-ge...

Unless something happens to the Central Arizona Project canal, Phoenix is (unfortunately) fine.

90% of the West's water goes to agriculture. Half of that is for cows. Cities aren't going to dry up, though buying out the farmers will be expensive
December 20, 2025 at 3:25 AM
I agree. Homophobic, too. Fuck Davis.
December 20, 2025 at 12:21 AM
The chicken and pig rearing industries are basically just torturing millions of animals 24-7. Fuck all that.
December 19, 2025 at 7:17 PM
The other top enemies of the constitution are all on the supreme court.
December 19, 2025 at 5:25 PM
Maybe I missed it, but that piece didn't consider new taxes on the rich.

Dems might be too spineless to do it, but I bet most voters would be okay with, say, 50% marginal tax rates on income over $ 1 million. How about 75% over $10 million? Not to mention carried interest. Lots of possibilities.
