Well, filesystem Images don't need to be unpacked during boot, so you save some time. Files also stay compressed and your memory footprint is lower. Lastly filesystems understand way more things than cpio archives (file attributes, ...). That's why we considered using erofs as initrd.

Are people really scared of trams? They are so ubiquitous in Germany that I never thought about it. From experience: They are much more harmless than cars. 😃
