I'm guessing you know the meaning of the words you write in your papers. The people I am talking about are almost functionally illiterate. But they don't know what they don't know. I try to help them close the gap.

Maybe not. I deal with extreme cases.I've gotten to where I want to point at a word on the paper and ask the student to define it. But I don't. I just confront them they usually crumble and I asked them to rewrite it in their own words. Learning to write is tough.

Phil. Prof. here. It is easy to tell when students use AI. They don't see how differently they come across in person vs. on paper. The more they use AI, the worse it gets. Others who can't write w/o AI won't see it. Folks not educated enough to be self aware.
