He takes his gaze off of the scope and stands with the rifle now held in one hand while another grabs onto what looked to be a grappling hook with a plunger attached to it, firing the plunger to then be pulled and reposition onto another elevated spot.

The mercenary would leave her to die... but there was a potential chance that he could profit out of this.
She could used as a bait for any of the stragglers roaming around the island and take them out before a fight erupts. Best way to avoid any misunderstanding if she thinks of him as hostile.
