Richard Thomas, Stewart Wieck, Travis Williams, and Joshua Gabriel Timbrook signified that by putting the Black Virtual Adept Master Dante on the cover of Mage in 1993 – one of the first depictions of a Black character on the cover of a roleplaying game who was not a slave, a “tribesman,” or a thug. And yes, I capitalize Black when referring to folks of African ancestry, because that’s considered to be a respectful way of observing a historical social distinction and all the expe- riences it implies. As with “magick,” (see below) that linguistic distinction holds an important significance to the people most involved with it. And speaking about the power of words, White Wolf was among the first RPG companies (if not the first) to employ feminine and gender-neutral pronouns as defaults, as opposed to the once-proper masculine default pronoun. Yes, such things are “liberal” in the eyes of certain people… and honestly, if someone is offended by the presentation of female, queer, or other “othered” people as being the equals of white, heterosexual men, I don’t understand why such people would play White Wolf games to begin with."

Dark purple text on light purple background. The Artist's Dilemma; some personal thoughts. I made a circle post on Twitter yesterday that reads the following. " I think there's a kind of cognitive dissonance to harshly criticizing artists for only drawing thin people because when we DO draw fat people those same people don't even bother clicking the like button, let alone sharing it. I see the difference in attention my posts get when it's a thin OC vs my fat sona. I see the difference." I kind of feel like I want to talk about this a little bit more, because I feel like it's given me a stopgap in my art a little bit. I want to draw my sona being sexy and cool and live vicariously through them. But I could draw two identical images - one of my fat sona, and one of a thin OC - and I know exactly which one is going to get more attention. Some folks will say "well, you should just draw for you!" and yeah, sure, but I can't pay for groceries with vicarious art, and when people ignore and don't share because they think fat ppl are icky or whatever, that kind of puts a damper in it? And I'm not here to cater to the fat fetish folks. They know it too, considering how much hate I've gotten for refusing to draw feederism and inflation. Sorry, I just want to see bodies like mine, in all its crippled, hashimotos-ridden glory, being sexy and joyful. But I can't. And the pressure I feel to make my characters all thin just to have wider appeal is really getting me down a bit. And I think the worst part is that it really is the exact same people who criticize artists for not drawing fat bodies that don't even bother throwing up a like or share when we do make them. Almost like they just want something to be mad at.
