the short version is that book awards are bullshit and the only thing they do is make big presses make money and certain authors get a moment

sorry, by saying that I just mean those major prizes tend, intentionally, to insulate themselves from small press work, and the committee formations are part of that, & the prize winners drive sales, so it works as a loop, & there's an aesthetic protection racket, which is so small as to be evil

there's always a committee for the big awards
