Arsenal Football Club got its name because it was founded by a group of workers at the Royal Arsenal munitions factory in Woolwich, south-east London, in 1886. Originally known as Woolwich Arsenal it later dropped 'Woolwich' and became Arsenal, also known as the Gunners.
