Amplify implies turning the volume up rather than sending existing signal, so that doesn’t make sense in connection with fact reporting. The OP is not saying journalist = fact reporter. Their follow up focus on fact checkers should make that clear. Again, fact checking IS journalism AND analysis.

Good. Then our disgreement is over your reduction of the OP’s point via a straw man fallacy. Your post assumes that they were only dinging fact reporting. Journalism includes both fact reporting and analysis. Fact checking is analysis. And some of them did a bad job.

Opinion | These fact-checks about Trump are accurate — but they completely miss the point
A series of missteps have hurt the reputation of the journalists who keep tabs on the truth.

I know who you are. And I know the difference between fact reporting and analysis. I teach this in my classes, and I write about it. Your 30 years in journalism doesn’t make you automatically right. It’s certainly a valid opinion. But it’s a wrong one based on a faulty interpretation of analysis.

Horrible analogy. “John walked across the street” is indeed a fact. So is the observation that “Last week, John also walked across the street, but at that time was seen by several witnesses slipping an envelope full of bills into the pocket of a notorious gangster.”

I.e., one is NOT reporting the facts when one leaves out some of the relevant facts.

And again, I don’t accept the premise that pointing to the clear contradictions in the public record vs Trump’s statements re: literally anything is analysis rather than fact reporting. They are all facts. What you can’t do is then say “this makes him a threat.” THAT is putting fingers on scales.

I teach college writing, which comes with a healthy dode of rhetorical training. Believe me when I say people SUCK at drawing conclusions. This plus the general reduction in people reading has lead to one of the most under-informed electorates in history. We can’t afford agnostic journalism.

Anyone who read your initial post when you suggested “it doesn’t work that way.” I’ve already explained why it can work that way. As for why it should … *gestures wildly around at everything* The reason good things don’t happen is that people accept the bad ways things are.

& yes, there are many layers to Twitter’s demise. I didn’t mean to suggest that was the only factor but it was a big one. Calling people out in public can be effective, but that’s mainly for other people, not for the troll itself, who will never change its spots. Blocking is just as effective.
November 21, 2024 at 4:19 PM
Why would I block you? We’re having a normal debate, complete with logic and reasoning. That’s kind of my point. Blocking isn’t for situations where you argue over an idea that has more than one answer. Blocking is for when people can’t or won’t listen to reason and are just here to spread hate.
November 21, 2024 at 4:16 PM
I mean, I hear you, but if that logic worked, Twitter would still, y’know, BE Twitter. Social shaming them doesn’t stop them from spreading hate. Arguing with them doesn’t stop them from making bad arguments.

True, although NY is 10th, topping many other red states. Maybe the point we can garner from this is not necessarily only one about GOP malfeasance. Maybe this is more of a comment on our overall health system, which is rife with shocking inequalities no matter what state you live in.

It also elevates their status in the community. By engaging with them at all, it sends the signal that what they’re doing is normal and comes with no consequences.
November 21, 2024 at 3:13 PM
I mean, you do you. But imo ratioing them doesn’t matter to them or address why they’re trolling you. Their motive is to make you respond. They get off on that. They care not at all about the metrics or the likes.

The culture here on Bluesky is to report and block. Don’t engage with trolls; it gives them what they want.

This is pretty much every conservative argument on any social issue whatsoever. “Science BAD, me awesome.”
November 21, 2024 at 3:04 PM
This is shameful and disingenuous. There is a way to acknowledge what he said while also calling attention to the fact that it was a lie. Don’t gaslight people for calling bs when bs is what’s clearly happening.

lol, yeah, pretty much sums up the vibe

This next 4 years is going to be like being stuck in a bad SNL skit where the audience isn’t laughing and there are no commercial breaks 🤣😭
