1) Alien Clay by Adrian Tchaikovsky

This stand alone book combines a unique blend of body horror, creepy other worldly elements, interesting characters, and excellent political commentary. I can see this book not working for some readers but I love Tchaikovsky’s writing and this book was straight🔥

2) Blindsight by Peter Watts

This bleak hard sci fi book hooked me with some very unique concepts early on. It’s one of the best first contact stories I’ve ever read. The concepts have stuck in my brain for months since finishing it. A magnificent read.

Brief interlude for an honorable mention: Descendant Machine by Gareth L. Powell

This book didn’t quite crack my top five, but Powell consistently puts out quality space opera. The plot moves quickly and it’s easy to read. Good stuff.

3) Disquiet Gods by Christopher Ruocchio

Incredible book six of the Sun Eater series. The plotting in this sci-fantasy series is superb and some of the story arcs pay off in a major way here. I was surprised by how many answers readers got to some of the larger questions. Can’t wait for book 7!

4) Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clark.

A classic sci fi first contact story done right. Rama, the alien space ship was so interesting to explore. The book posed lots of questions without giving readers a ton of concrete answers. The narrative left room for readers to interpret, which I love.

5) Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert

I finished reading this right before seeing the Dune Part Two movie. It helped me understand some of the deeper themes of the series and where the next movie is likely going. Dark, fascinating, and took Paul’s character in a direction I didn’t expect.
