That part of the poem was quoted in the Times leader in 1940 when Europe had fallen, the US hadn't entered the war, and Britain briefly stood alone against the Nazis.
Then in 1944 the Times quoted it again.
'The high tide!" King Alfred cried.
"The high tide and the turn!"
