When I opened the box — no ashes, just a tiny plaster imprint they’d made of her paw print.

There’s no moral, no lesson to be learned, just thankfulness that I don’t have to do that after all.

The box sat there for 11 months until, after having to unexpectedly put another cat down last week, I decided that I needed to just deal with it. We decided that we’d scatter the ashes under the deck, where she loved to hide when it was warm outside.

I was unreasonably mad. Like, kinda furious that the hospital had dropped this at my doorstep. I put the unopened package in the garage and told myself that I’d deal with this later. It was like they’d assigned me to deal with the grief all over again.
