Poetry read as follows: We wake up each morning to a life never wanted; a dream yet revived; people who never see us, only the light they wish to dream. A name misspoken; gender misaligned; the child who belongs to a god we no longer see. Beyond, a world of noise taxes our senses. Insufferable consequences of ears, eyes, skin. How then do we live when we can barely only survive? Battered and bruised before the day’s even gotten off. A rage we’ve learned to hide burns from the inside. We try to let it be free, but it clings with molten hands. So what then is there? Awaiting death? Days in a body so broken, brain so foggy? We want to believe there is more out there, waiting. Waiting. Maybe this is as far as we go. Isn’t it high time we give up? What more do we owe this life? Nothing, I say. It’s taken everything we have but the beat of our heart and little for the trouble. Yet deep in the crevasse of our thoughts, death is not the answer. Feelings without association. The last line of defense. Our prison and our salvation.
