Standing in the Gap: A Call to Justice and Compassion By Chaplain Justin Wyatt Faith & Justue Isaiah 1:17 Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow. Scripture: Isaiah 1:17 (NIV) "Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow." As chaplains, we are called to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, the Good Shepherd who ministered to the outcasts, the brokenhearted, and the oppressed. In these troubling times, we find ourselves standing in the gap for those who have been marginalized and mistreated. We serve in a nation where an administration driven by fear and division has sought to dismantle the dignity of people created in the image of God. Our communities are groaning under the weight of injustice - Brown bodies are being deported and separated from their families, Black lives continue to be devalued by systemic racism, and sexism and homophobia persist in places that should be sanctuaries of love and safety. We see the confusion and sadness in the eyes of those who are made to feel like strangers in their own country, their own churches, their own homes. Yet, in the face of injustice, we are not powerless. God has placed us in this position as pastoral caregivers— not to be silent witnesses but as voices crying out in the wilderness, calling for righteousness and mercy. The work of chaplaincy is not just about offering prayers; it is about embodying the presence of Christ in spaces of despair. It is about standing beside the immigrant who fears deportation, comforting the Black mother grieving yet another unjust killing, embracing the woman who is told her voice doesn't matter, and affirming the humanity of those whom society has rejected because of who they love. Our role is not easy. It is filled with lament, with moments of righteous anger, and with a deep burden for those whom society has cast aside. But we do not labor in vain. When we offer care, we remind people that they are not forgotten. When we speak out, we remind the world that God stands on the side of the oppressed. When we intercede in prayer, we declare that the kingdom of God is one of love, not hate; of inclusion, not exclusion; of justice, not oppression. We must be bold in our proclamation that God's love is radical, liberating, and inclusive. The Gospel compels us to reject racism in all its forms, to affirm the dignity of women, and to stand against homophobia that seeks to distort the image of God in our brothers and sisters. To be silent in the face of these injustices is to be complicit. But to speak truth in love is to stand where Jesus stood — with the least, the lost, and the left out. Let us take up the call of Isaiah - to seek justice, to defend the oppressed, to stand as beacons of hope amid darkness. Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season, we shall see the fruit of our labor. And above all, let us never forget that Christ, the ultimate chaplain of our souls, walks with us as we walk with others. Reflection Questions: 1. How am I using my position as a chaplain to challenge racism, sexism, and homophobia in my community? 2. In what ways can I actively advocate for justice in my role as a pastoral caregiver? 3. How can I provide spiritual and emotional care to those impacted by unjust immigration policies, racial violence, gender discrimination, and exclusion? 4. Where is God calling me to be bolder in standing for righteousness and mercy? Prayer: O God of justice and mercy, strengthen us for the work ahead. When we see injustice, give us the courage to speak. When we encounter sorrow, equip us with compassion to comfort. When we grow weary, renew our strength to continue the good fight of faith. Let us not be swayed by the fear of rejection but embolden us to stand firm in the truth that Your love is for all people - Black and Brown, male and female, queer and straight, citizen and stranger. May our presence be a reflection of Your radical love, and may we always stand in solidarity with those whom You call blessed — the poor, the persecuted, the stranger, and the brokenhearted.

Remember this is a regime and he's not acting alone; 3. Do not argue with those who support him-it doesn't work, 4. Focus on his POLICIES, not his orange-ness and his mental state: 5. Keep your message positive; they want the country to be angry and fearful because this is the soil from which their darkest policies will grow; 6. No more helpless/hopeless talk; 7. Support artists and the arts; 8. Be careful not to spread fake news. Check it; 9. Take care of yourselves; And 10. Resist! When you post or talk about him, don't assign his actions to him, assign them to "The Republican Administration, or "The Republicans." This will have several effects: the Republican legislators will either have to take responsibility for their association with him or stand up for what some of them don't like; he will not get the focus of attention he craves.
