Lead meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Lincoln, IL. Brewers and Packers fan. Long time amateur genealogist. Opinions (not that I usually post any) are my own.
How it started / how it’s going. First photo at 11 pm, the other at 4:20 am. One of the few benefits of the midnight shift.

Today’s harvest from the garden. Lots of fresh sauces in the future, and blackberry cobbler is currently in the oven.

Lincoln IL weather balloon was still visible at an altitude of 24,000 feet this evening. Low sun angle and light winds aloft helping out.

I lived in Milwaukee when they opened the 1987 season with a 13 game winning streak, which is the franchise record. Hope to see them break that record soon!

I’ve been noticing the Rivian EV plant in Normal, Illinois has been showing up on GOES-19 satellite data recently. 1st image from this morning (through the smoke layer), second from Sentinel-2 this past Sunday.

First time on the warning desk since July. I think I ended up putting out 13-14 warnings on Thursday. Friday looks like another active day.

Today is my day off, but I will be heading to work in a few hours to help out with this outbreak. We have 10 people scheduled to work on an evening where the normal staffing is 2. We will keep working even if the government shuts down. Saving lives is our #1 priority.

Pasadena area fire showing up on radar imagery early this morning. The radar closer to the Palisades fire went offline earlier, but did show them clearly as well. Radar beam height is around 2300 feet in this area.

The snow did its absolute best to avoid Bloomington. I measured only 0.6 inches, while at work 30 miles southwest, it was more like 6-7 inches.

Living on the northern edge has its drama. Challenging forecast for this system.

Been a few years since we’ve had such heavy snow in our area. Hopefully that axis of heaviest snow doesn’t go any further north.

All year, my kids were bugging me to participate in No Shave November. So, I finally gave it a go. Here’s the result. First beard I have grown in nearly 35 years. Haven’t decided if I’m keeping my it, though I would not go with a longer length if I did.

Between my work schedule and the steady decline in temperatures this week, it was a good day to get the outside Christmas decorations up. High of 57° today.

I’ve seen fall streak holes on satellite before, but I don’t recall seeing one in person. This was east of Peoria, IL this afternoon.

My family, especially the younger two kids, have been nagging me all year to grow a beard, something I haven’t done in about 35 years. Here’s one week’s worth.
