Some neat clinch work from both Silva and Allen. Allen lands a big knee to the jaw, then Silva gets 2 on 1 wrist control, angles his shoulder in to force separation, and spins on the way out.

Jean Silva isn't a super deep offensive boxer, but his body hook and combos off it do a lot of work setting up hurting shots in closed stance engagements

He feints into it well so he's not super easy to counter and you have to respect its power enough to expose yourself

Jean Silva showing off slick clinch work, taking a single leg and climbing to an underhook, establishing head position, then landing an elbow as Allen tries to apply overhook pressure

On the cage he threatens a trip and lands an elbow, making it easier to trip Allen next time

Early in their fight, Jean Silva would try to control Allen's lead hand to draw out his rear so he could counter

Allen messed up his timing for counters by flicking out quick straight lefts without weight transfer, shaving time off the delivery and eschewing the usual tells

Arnold Allen had success circling away from Silva early, but he would blade his stance and get behind his lead shoulder to avoid the hook

Silva started catching him on the pivot, sneaking his own lead foot outside and cutting him off, then landing his rear hand

Fun scramble between Akopyan & Bukuev

Akopyan fights grips to escape the back and circles off as Bukuev shoots in again, ending up trapping his arm inside the leg

As Bukuev tries to posture up and finish the takedown, Akopyan uses a crotch lock to tilt him forward off balance

Brandon Slay hitting outside step double legs

Outside step entries are more direct than penetrating knee over toe and can be done from closer range
December 22, 2025 at 6:46 PM
I cover everything from GSP's classic inside step double leg, to Daniel Cormier's outside step high crotch, and Umar Nurmagomedov's tricky shots to the rear hip

The rest of the article is about categorizing various types of penetration and examining the high percentage finishing options, setups and how they change across stance matchups, as well as what styles are best suited for each entry

The groundwork for a clean entry is laid before a shot is taken

The easiest entries happen when opponents are drawn out of position - mid-counter, standing tall, or with their weight off the front foot

Feints & throwaways bypass all layers of defense & open up the hips

A key concept for MMA wrestling is the split step

If you change levels and drive forward at the same time, your momentum goes down into the mat

Split steps let you get low and explode forward in one motion, without sacrificing position

A favorite of the Dagi wrestlers

Yan mogging Merab in transition, landing knees to the body when he turns out of back control on the cage
December 10, 2025 at 6:45 PM
Yan with a cheeky little takedown setup
December 7, 2025 at 9:00 PM
One of the disadvantages of a broad but shallow toolkit is that if something fails a couple times, you might have to abandon it, even if it earlier proved a crucial weapon

While someone with Yan's depth on the feet can vary his setups endlessly, play with timing and rhythm, etc
