💚 Good news for forests, people, and our planet ahead of #COP30.

Brazil and partners launch the Tropical Forest Forever Facility. This multi-billion-dollar fund will reward countries for keeping forests standing and is the kind of action we need to address the nature and climate crisis.

Canada is off track to protect 25% of land & water by 2025 AND 30% by 2030.

“Protected & conserved areas are a cornerstone of our efforts to stop biodiversity loss & build climate resilience. There's great urgency for CA to recommit & invest further in our lands & waters.” —@jamessnider.bsky.social

🏙️ Populations of species in urban landscapes have declined by 17% since 1970.
Cities cover little of Canada’s land, but their impact reaches far beyond. While some species — like peregrine falcons and raccoons — adapt, others such as the bobolink struggle amid roads, crops and concrete.

Today's federal budget puts nearly $90-billion toward capital spending, national defense, housing & economic growth. But one thing is missing: nature.

Instead, it incl:

❌ The possible end of the oil & gas emissions cap
❌ Cuts to ECCC & the DFO
❌ No new funding to protect or restore biodiversity

🐦 Since 1970, chimney swift populations have 📉 by 90%.

Once nesting in hollow trees, chimney swifts adapted to city life — raising their young in chimneys after forests were cleared. But as old chimneys disappear & insect populations decline, these agile flyers are losing both homes & food.

👻 It's Halloween & World Lemur Day!

👀 With their big glowing eyes and nocturnal habits, lemurs fit right into spooky season. BUT these primates aren't scary — lemurs play a vital role in keeping forests in Madagascar healthy by spreading seeds as they move through trees.

Since 1970, species populations in 🇨🇦 marine & coastal habitats have remained mostly stable (-4%) but half of monitored species are declinig.

There's hope: marine mammals are recovering, and protecting blue carbon habitats can help store carbon, reduce flooding & safeguard coasts.
