The #Lapwing gal has been getting a lot of deserved attention. Big fan of Kuji's works.

I found DVD’s of this anime in a bargain bin many years ago. It changed the course of my artistic endeavors quite a bit. Truly a hidden gem — would love to see Haibane Renmei remade someday.

BI-Tan’s Domain now has Persistence! Unlocked teleports will be remembered when joining instances!

If you do go back, be sure to respawn while standing in front of this poster at the end of the final area! You might appreciate the "hidden ending" a bit more than the 2000's brainrot lol. Either way, thanks for giving it a go!

I could keep going, but I think I've talked about the most fun aspects of the project so far. Here's BI-Tan's programmer as a reward for reading through!

So, I spent no less than 3 hours just staring at her code, desperately trying to comprehend it, and through sheer willpower, managed to (mostly accurately) recreate it in graph nodes. It was enough to finally get me started with BI-Tan's dialog.

I felt like I was having a lot of successful experiments. But then I had to start creating scripts... These are the brains behind BI-Tan. It handles all of her interactions. Needless to say, it was a pain.

I knew making a Backrooms segment was inevitable, but I wanted it to be... different. I kept thinking; warp it! It started as a simple gridded floor, insetting spots where walls would be, and then wrapping the whole thing in a wireframe "cage" to deform it!

The bulk of the city segments are built off that tiny atlas alone! I'm thrilled with the results! I approached a few other areas with the same resource-conscious mindset, such as the Tatami Rooms, Gamer Zone, and Bathrooms, by building specific atlases to work off of.
January 7, 2025 at 3:23 AM
Since the main draw of this world was going to be images, I tried to keep the design of the world itself manageable in terms of resources. I copy/pasted bits and pieces from photos of Osaka and Tokyo, corrected the perspective, and made a tiny 512x512 atlas to work with.
January 7, 2025 at 3:23 AM
And of course, the world itself. Despite the simple concept, this was a massive endeavor, mostly because I wanted to ensure this would work on Quest. The first major hurdle was finding a sustainable workflow for organizing and atlasing all the image files I'd be using.

I of course had to have fun drawing my new character in-between animating. I wanted her to have a nice balance of innocently cute and unhinged gremlin.
January 7, 2025 at 3:23 AM
Surprisingly enough, the animating part was pretty straightforward and fun. Most of her animations were done on my Steam Deck while working slow shifts at my part-time. I was animating without a script, so there are some extra animations that never got used in her dialog.

But nothing compared to the work face rigging required. I had to peel back some very tucked-away parts of Blender to get this machine functioning. I am still bewildered how anyone is supposed to intuitively learn this on their own.
