Especially the Balkan region's rivers and lakes are home to many endemic species which occur nowhere else on the planet, among them 69 fish species like the Dalmatian minnow (Delminichthys adspersus), the Neretvan nase (Chondrostoma knerii) and the Vardar streber (Zingel balcanicus).
