As a journalism colleague once said to me... if one party says it's sunny and one says it's raining, journalists should not just report on what "both sides" say.

They should look out the window.

I dislike the calculator comparison, though I see it a lot.

A calculator requires you to still understand what math is needed. If you don't know how to solve a differential equation, a calculator is useless.

That's a far cry from just asking AI to solve the problem for you.

Smaller carbon footprint. Basic factual accuracy. Using my brain. Producing something original. Respect for copyright and intellectual property. Students thinking for themselves.

Basically, the benefits of being human.

I spent the better part of finals grading begging for an awkward sentence or syntax error to indicate that I was at least reading student/human writing.

The AI generated slop is so cold and lifeless.

I tried to make this point when asked to serve on a committee tasked with writing new guidelines for AI use in research and creative activity.

Guess what isn't in the guidelines.
