Every rankings e-mail I receive (THE, QS etc.) ends up in my institutional e-mail quarantine. Think of all of that labour around soliciting e-mail addresses and a lot it ends in invites being filed as spam…

So @totallyshow.bsky.social, Almaty is closer to Tokyo (5329 km) than it is to Newcastle (5539 km). Roll on the Champions League draw!

We had a lovely time at Tatton Park near Knutsford (Cheshire) today. Aside from the kids walking through a herd of deer, the real highlight is the Japanese Garden. Very distant parts of my father’s family were cleared to make way for the parkland and decanted to a new village set up by the Lord.

Saw myself a roe deer at Wicken Fen, just outside Ely. It’s also an invertebrate hotbed of butterflies, damselflies, and dragonflies.

I first visited back in 2005 as part of my Part 1 fieldclass doing some classic landscape investigation - after Oliver Rackham - then on the bus to Hayley Wood.

A heartening line about the 1992 Reith Lectures for anyone who has ever organised a seminar series. And look who they found in 1993.
