In the UK, the water sector is in the midst of a water crisis through a failure to invest in services. The crisis has triggered the largest review of the legislative and regulatory framework in the UK since privatisation. We have not reached the same point as the UK and we can avoid it, but the parallels and warning signs are clear. The NPR data shows that we are following a similar price pattern to the UK of flat to declining bills in real terms. 2023-24 continues that pattern of flat water and wastewater bills for the last 11 years in Australia. In contrast to the pattern of customer bills, investment in water and wastewater services is rising strongly. As the 2023-2024 NPR states: “Overall, the sum of total capital expenditure for water supply and wastewater service increased by 24.4% from the previous year.” Capital investment required will accelerate further in coming years. This investment is critical to provide new housing, renew ageing assets and meet the challenges of climate change. The new data in the NPR highlights that both governments and regulators appear to be approving only the bare minimum that needs to be done at a minimum cost. This will not serve current or future generations well and could put us on the path to a water crisis.

📢 First Nations Better Practice Community Engagement | Thursday 27 February 2025 - 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM AEDT Kimberley Communities Solar Savers: enabling a just energy transition in remote communities Horizon Power’s Kimberley Communities Solar Saver program – backed by $10.5 million in funding from the Commonwealth and Western Australia Governments - is increasing renewables in WA’s far north and helping more regional and remote households save on energy bills. The innovative rooftop solar project is delivering a just energy transition by enabling remote communities that were previously locked out of the benefits of rooftop solar to participate in the energy transition. Hear from Horizon Power’s Dylan Hearty (ne Heath) and Kezia Smith, about their pilot project in Warmun, a remote Aboriginal community located two hours south of Kununurra, and what they’ve learned along the way.
