No good-faith reading of free speech as a "negative" right would say it includes a right never to have anyone criticize you, debunk you, or study your comms tactics. That's other people using their rights! The deeper question really only comes in when you start talking about bans / removals.

I don't think you actually need this framing (which is liable to abuse) to defend the kind of work you're talking about here--lawfare, threats etc. to suppress private research on narratives is an infringement on the researchers' freedom in the classic ("negative") sense, not the other way around.

Even without the personal angle, his public "Russia and China first" comments are enough for major alarm. Yet even a lot of D.C. types don't seem to have him on their radar. Is there a way to get this into wider media circulation, force Congressional Republicans, and Rubio, to respond?

It's got a very specific tech-bro bent, too - the idea that adding value exclusively means producing gadgets, rather than sometimes being rooted in human thought, relationships, creativity. Though plenty of things people are willing to pay - or fight and die - for actually fall in those categories.

- people on here default to despair while MAGA oozes confidence. If one side is in a place of "I will fix all your problems next month" and the other is at "you may die in misery and oppression, but someone else will live to carry on the torch," camp #2 is not going to be too appealing to most.

There are elements of consistency, sure, but also pieces of the Trump platform that were seen as extreme or even just wildly out of step with mainstream Republican politics and suddenly have wide support. I mean, I agree with a lot of your problem analysis, but I am frustrated with how quickly -

Sure, but then shouldn't the response be to aggressively push for more fundamental change in the near term? If the Trump movement was able to dramatically shift the Overton window overnight, why can't the left / left-liberals do the same, especially in a moment of crisis?

A long-term vision for deepening democracy is great, but with tight vote margins and acute threats to welfare and rights (increasingly including the right to autonomous local institutions) I don't know that it's quite time to resign ourselves to decades of this sh*t at the national level.

This isn't even trying to scare people, though - he seems to be openly arguing that we should just stop worrying and reconcile ourselves to a future as a subordinate manufacturing outpost for the "more advanced" PRC. Daft from a natsec / sovereignty / democracy perspective.

People with national comms reach need to pick this stuff up, lean all the way into "these a**holes think they're better than you and that ordinary folks are too inferior to tie their own shoelaces, let alone vote," and make that the brand of MAGA forever.

In all seriousness, there are lots of different people in faith communities and some of them may care, for instance, that we're doing this to people fleeing leftist dictators in LatAm. Anyone not already in the coalition speaking up for anything humane and decent imo is a welcome first step.
