A lot of earth science research is constrained by software engineering — lack of $$ and time for dedicated work building tools to manage models, data ingest, compute on HPC systems etc. LLMs definitely help in this regard, and speaking from personal experience free up time for actual science

Odd to me that some of the gage points do not align with stream features (in CA) and are also not actually assigned a geographic place name (but some are). Wish the training data were shown side by side and also cited.

I think this a balanced and reasonable take

In fact I’m sure this is wrong since the line starts at 1860. I’m thinking the whole thing is shifted and off by 5 years

The 10 year average appears incorrect to me? It looks like it’s lower than where I would visually expect the mean.

The first thing I did when the email search of the last files dump came out was search “David Brooks” but nothing came up. Feeling very vindicated now!

Have you tried engaging at all with any of the other posts on your bsky feed from climate risk professionals? This story is more complicated than you are making it sound. Climate risk assessment is not a solved problem.

idk, someone just posted on bluesky dot com about how they don't like all of the ai slop, maybe others might feel the same 🤷

why is that
November 25, 2025 at 9:55 PM
this is why my long-bet is on legacy and paid/subscription based media! the stamp of approval of a publisher can only increase in value as the alternatives diminish in quality. that's my optimistic take at least

I’m sure all of the replies to this will be very normal and level headed
November 25, 2025 at 6:18 PM
Agreed but if think this leaves out that most of the searchable content has also gone to trash (for example, Google any recipe) because of ad monetization

I’m developing a theory that there should be some sort of lottery system for becoming a political journalist. The current system is … clearly not bringing out the best

I cancelled after they wrote the article about Mamdani's SAT scores or college application or whatever that BS was; should have cancelled long before.

FWIW I’m early career w/ 6 first author pubs and I don’t really get that many review requests. (But I have reviewed far more than authored). I think part of what you describe is a tendency for writers to select only the the top people in the field as recommended reviewers in the submission process

Yes the appreciation is the same … but the faster you gain equity (30 yr mtg) means the sooner you can benefit from appreciation (by selling). So 1st time buyer prob better off renting and investing the difference. Not much benefit to 50 yr mtg in the near term
November 11, 2025 at 11:58 PM
there's no way this is the case — mortage interest amortization means that you're paying more in interest at the beginning. realistically for 1st home buyers, you sell after ~10 years (job move, family etc). With a 50 year mortgage you've netted basically nothing
