Loving author of Acuitas the symbolic AI and other robots-in-progress. Aspiring fiction writer, video game appreciator. Satellite electronics are my day job.
Caturday seems like a good time to introduce Gwydion, my gift from the Cat Distribution System. I took him in on Wednesday and have confirmed with the neighbors that he's a stray who gets fed at several houses. I've been rather distracted by seeing to his needs since.

Christmas presents complete! This is a seven-letter build of Cees' Cryptex (www.printables.com/model/28937-...). Tougher than I expected (a little elephant foot will throw off the letter wheel/encoder tolerances), but amazing once I got it right. #3dPrinting

I took apart an old tachometer and got the needle movement I wanted for the high-precision scale. It's a delicate little device.

Just for fun/solidarity, here's my original attempt at printing the underbody. Silk PLA, I tell ya ...

Finished early, a little Christmas gift for my adopted brother, as a tribute to one of his old cars. (He is not on this site and won't see it.) Model is "Foldable Pontiac Firebird Trans AM 1982" by GOODesign on Fab365, printed and painted by me. #3dPrinting

Carrot harvest round 2! I got a full five pounds this time. They couldn't get long because the bed wasn't very deep, so some of them decided to get *wide* ahahaha #gardening 🌱

Here's a picture a friend took of a ground squirrel on our vacation this summer. I like to see them enjoy bounty.

Potato harvest round 2 (from the tires)! Got another 4.8 pounds to add to the late-summer harvest from the other beds, which pushes my total for this year over 11 lb. Some nice big ones in there too. #gardening 🌱

First time I've printed silk PLA, and it was, uh, a learning experience. The lowest recommended temp is 190, but I have to print it at 175-180 to control the strings. Makes me wonder if my hotend temperature is off.

Read: "Lord Jim" (Joseph Conrad). This is the first Conrad novel I've read. It's an extended character sketch of a young sailor who loses his sense of honor through a personal failure, then simply can't get over it - the event rules the rest of his life.

I realize I've been quiet lately. Dealing with a significant life event and haven't felt like saying much. Please enjoy this tiny friend I met in my bathroom. #spider

I went to a bunch of effort to port the eyeball's OpenCV-based software from Python to C++, and got no significant performance improvement! Both versions can only handle about 1 fps. If that's how it's gonna be, I might as well do Python and save myself some grief. #robotics #computerVision #openCV

Year's first potato harvest! My other batch in the tires are still green and growing, so I'll be harvesting them later. I got about 6.7 pounds in this first phase. #gardening #potatoes 🌱

Finally got on the Blue Prince bandwagon and I have no regrets.

My very first carrots! This is 1/2 to 2/3 of the crop - I thinned them out and left the others to grow larger. Yes, the best of them are short - my bed isn't all that deep. I got a little over a pound, and froze the greens too. #gardening 🌱

Read: "Prophecy of the Sisters" (Michelle Zink). This book blends Celtic, Norse, and Christian mythos to create the premise for a story about twin sisters, destined to either permanently banish the fallen angels who sired the Nephilim, or release them, triggering the world's end. #amReading #books

Read: "Brothers of the Snake" (Abnett). I'm not a 40K fan; some friends convinced me to read this. Given that starting point, it was more engaging and appealing than I expected. It's a thoroughly good example of what it is, namely, pulpy stories about space marines.

How it works:

Full disclosure, the five-pocket bladder operating this cylinder was very leaky - but good enough that I could demonstrate actuation of the cylinder if I cycled quickly. #robotics #hydraulics

The thing I need to figure out now is quality. Of the first three I made, one was destroyed in the gluing phase, one leaks from the center, and one worked (until I put it in the joint and a tiny flaw in the plastic popped under load).

I might have made a breakthrough in 3D fluid bladders. Making accordion folds on the heat-sealer is hard; fusing two pillows in the center (with a hole in the middle) is easy. #robotics #hydraulics

Most of the potatoes in the beds have decided they're done for the year due to heat, but tire potatoes are still thriving despite a little bug damage. Maybe because the tire shades the roots? Anyway, have some potato blooms. #gardening #plants 🌱
