Agree this is a concern and bears close watching, particularly since the U.S. is such a heavily armed country! But re the Weimar context, I was struck that the political parties were fielding heavily armed militias that literally were killing each other in large numbers, fueling the final crisis.

The lesson for us, today, that I derive from Weimar is to we need to be ever watchful for the rise of powerful heavily armed militias or military-police units devoted to the dear leader or a political party. I don’t see that happening today.
