The schoolchildren's strikes of 1911 were immortalised in a great play by Billy Colville and Dave Marson, put on at the Half Moon Theatre in East London in 1973: Fall In And Follow Me. Dave was a Hull docker who researched the strikes after spotting reference to them in an old press cutting.

Really pleased to be speaking at @theajeuk.bsky.social conference this week. To mark the occasion, there's also a discount offer on the Palgrave book What's the Point of News?, courtesy of @snsocsci.bsky.social.

I'm honoured to be asked to speak at @theajeuk.bsky.social conference this week - it's always provided a space for journalism and academia to meet in a positive and supportive environment. To mark the occasion, @sagepub.com are even offering a discount on my book Journalism: Principles and Practice.

Really sad news. Many tributes will quite rightly be paid to Andrew Norfolk's investigative journalism, but when he talked to me for the book Journalism: Principles and Practice he also had plenty of wise words about getting the basics right, as learned in the local press.

A small but important par in this new @reutersinstitute.bsky.social report about journalists in the UK shows the good news that union membership is up on the previous study. Too many non-members, though, so plenty of scope for @nujofficial.bsky.social recruitment in the months and years ahead.

Here's the wreath from my union branch along with @neilwilby.bsky.social, who spoke on behalf of the @nujofficial.bsky.social and who pointed out the risks faced by journalists in the UK as well as in Gaza and around the world. #WorkersMemorialDay

I see the Valentine's Fair is back in Leeds city centre - 25 years ago it was the subject of the first article I had in a peer-reviewed academic journal. I'd just done a cultural studies masters...does it show?
