Elodie could hear something else. A voice. Several voices in fact. Overlapping each other. Which is when she realised— She had left the spirit box outside on the ground. Elodie looked back to the trap door which bled in little moonlight. They had almost been whispering to begin with but grew louder now, their voices turning to shouts and screams: ‘Get out.’ ‘Go!’ ‘GET OUT.’ ‘RUN.’ ‘IT’S A TRAP!’ ‘GET AWAY GET AWAY GET AWAY.’ Elodie knew Harvest was yelling the same but barely heard her as the shadow was moving too. The three of them escaped in a scrambled but not before something caught Elodie’s eye.

When she got pass the last bend and came to the manor, she was met with the familiar sight. There seemed to be almost double the amount from yesterday, all leering at her as she walked up. She saw but didn’t really take them in until she paused by the gate. She knew as soon as she touched it or if Harvest came to the window they would fly away. But where do they go? she thought. Gently, she went for the gate lock. As she reached for it, a few flew away. When she drew back, they also came back. She slowly went for it again and a few more went to, as slow as she went herself. As she was doing this, they continued to look at. Waiting, in anticipation for her to come onto the Bell Tower property. One of the ones in front was particularly large. It stood on the fence, close to the gate, but had not moved yet.

(I know it's no longer the first but it probably is somewhere in the world)
He stayed the night. Thankfully not in my room. I couldn’t bring myself to write anymore the previous night. I don’t want my words to be washed away by my own self. Tears on a page does more damage to my story than all else. He stayed for tea, lunch, tea again, and dinner. During that time, he toured the Manor. Toured myself again. Several times. His wandered eyes unable to control themselves. He went back to my parent’s room a number of times. And to my room even more. Looking at my drawers every time he thought no one else was observing him. It destroyed me to think that soon he could do what he wanted. Go where he wanted. Touch what he wanted.

Harvest didn’t look up. ‘They wouldn’t appear to us in the first place if they didn’t want to.’ ‘Didn’t really answer my question.’ ‘Why did they appear to us at all? Now that’s the real question. People have been in and out of this manor for years so why now? Why us? And when I say us, I mean you, Elodie, seeing as you found the first page.’ The ghosts both looked up at Elodie. It was clear they had already discussed this, without her. ‘Well, when you figure it out, let me know,’ Elodie said, grabbing her bag. ‘I’m off to book club.’ Harvest stared at her and Elodie stared back. Go on, Elodie thought. I dare you to challenge it. We both know you’re going to so let’s get on with it. But, all Harvest said was, ‘Have a good time.’

Athena Saxon was invisible. Or at least she tried to be. It wasn’t exactly easy in her tiny shop. There wasn’t anywhere to hide. Even behind the till didn’t hide her fully. The desk was low for her appropriate height despite the fact she wore heels and towered over it most days. And with dozens of pairs, she couldn’t exactly not wear heels. That would be a waste. The reason for such a feeling was she felt like it had been an awful long time since she was alone. Not that she didn’t want the company of her friends from time to time but not only had she seen and spoken to them everyday, it had been multiple times a day for weeks now! She barely had enough conversation topics to cover their interactions now. She ended up staying silent instead, nodding as if she was keeping up. Instead of looking forward to seeing them coming through the door, she dreaded the bell going. Could she not just have one day of peace? Could she not just read the latest book she had checked out? Vincent’s romance section was poor but improving with the suggestions she gave him.

I knew nothing of him. Only that he had money, not Cross money but money nonetheless. And that’s all I needed to know. Not whether he was kind or smart or warm. I did not know what he knew of me but likely nothing. My looks were enough. Caked in powder and other paint to hide my true face, I waited for him alongside my parents just outside our property. My corset tight and my heels uncomfortable. He didn’t arrive until late past midday. His carriage wasn’t as good as ours but his horses were better. I wondered if that was where his money was. When he stepped out, he didn’t look at us first. He looked at the house. And as he did that, I took him in. I expected him to be a troll, a monster of some kind. I’ve only known men like that, but, then again, I only really know my father. But he was handsome, short groomed hair with a thick mustache. He stood tall yet he wasn’t much higher than myself. His back never hunched, his posture always stiff. His smile pearly and charming. His eyes were another story.
