Diving into Draft II of this thing.

Thank you @mdbell79.bsky.social for reminding me that taking the time to outline what you've already got is, like, the cool big-kid thing to do.

Writers: if you haven't picked up Matt's REFUSE TO BE DONE, do that now please.

"To those inclined toward kindness, I say

Come out of your houses drumming. All others,
beware: I have discarded my smile, but not my teeth."

Rita Dove, ringing in the moment.

Not all Patrons of the Arts wear fancy suits and go to fancy galas. Sometimes they're the guy restocking the vending machine at the library who's got an extra package of Swedish Fish to give away.

If you haven't picked up @tananarivedue.bsky.social 's THE REFORMATORY yet, get thee to the bookstore. This book is so good. It's SO good, you guys. It's Stephen King's IT + THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION + Chadwick Boseman's MARSHALL, set in Jim Crow Florida. I cannot say enough good things.

Everyone needs to call their Dem Senator right now. They are starting to cave.

Tell them:
1. Vote NO on Cloture
AND
2. Vote NO on the Republican spending bill.

Don't let them pivot to reconciliation. GOP doesn't need Dem votes on that and they know it.

TODAY is the showdown. (202) 224-3121

Ooooooooh the shushing police are getting their comeuppance at the public library today.

The Resident Gentleman around here is in the next room working on a project, watching FOYLE'S WAR, and whistling along with the theme song every time it comes on. Also he got me a jumping spider for my birthday. On top of his game this weekend, I must say.

Bought @colsonwhitehead.com's HARLEM SHUFFLE in hardback first, gave it to my dad. Bought it in paperback to reread. Treated myself this month to the audiobook because the world is a scary place and this book is like an old friend. #booksky #amreading

And that’s the week done: a re-organized plot and 8500 words added to the rough draft of this thing. It’s snowing in Seattle…kind of…and time to do stuff out in the world for a bit.

I have changed in many ways since I was a child. Evidence of my eating a Toblerone has not.

This is a great summation of where we are, why it feels the way it feels right now, and how to move forward.

I’ve got a two-fer this week: I hit 35K with the rough draft of The New Thing (pictured), AND yesterday I showed up to a session with a student, ready to read Day 10 of Loki’s Guide to Taking the Blame, and the kid had finished the book on his own! A triumphant first! 🥰

Welp. I can’t do anything about the state of the world today, so instead it’s Favorite Hat Friday. Who’s got a favorite hat? This one’s mine. I stole it from my mom, who got it from the elementary school she taught at, which happens to be my elementary school when I was a kid. #favoritehatfriday

Back seat of car. Books. Protein. Throw in an impact drill and a tape measure that I swear was right there a second ago but who knows where it is now and that’s basically my 2025. 😁

I rarely, RARELY read books by the save author back to back. I’m a slow reader, and usually by the time I’m done with a book I need a new voice in my head for a bit. That said, after @lizmoorebooks.bsky.social’s THE GOD OF THE WOODS, I dove straight into LONG BRIGHT RIVER. No regrets. 5 stars.
