We know she was only saying goodbye, but that’s just her word against Handsome Chinese Man Number One’s, Handsome Chinese Man Number Two’s, Handsome Chinese Man Number One’s sister’s, and Handsome Chinese Man Number One’s girlfriend’s—who, let’s not forget, although being just an accounts assistant prides herself on being extremely observant. Allow me. Friends and family or fans of K-pop or K-drama stars will often send a coffee truck to wherever they’re filming or performing, as a gesture of affection and congratulations. They’re really popular with the crews working with the actors and create a lot of goodwill. I’m jealous!

Just ChatGPT and me having our morning meeting. It holds my hand and reassures me that I’ve not gone mad: I’m living in a Beckett play.
Screenshot of ChatGPT output. It confirms that an official involved in my friend’s care really is taking the piss. I ask whether the local authority is trying to drive me mad, and it assures me they are. I find ChatGPT useless for creative matters—it can’t write as well as I can, and it can’t design graphics I’d put my name to. That’s not boasting; it’s just a limitation of the whole thing. AI writing and graphics are still fairly poor compared to skilled human work, but that hasn’t stopped people from using it to churn out lacklustre content for money. I doubt anyone will see this, tucked away in the alt text, but sometimes I slip in my (un)popular opinions. As a companion in a battle against a mindless authority, I don’t think ChatGPT can be beaten. It surveys the whole scene, remembers what I’ve been put through before, amasses the evidence, and reminds me when they’ve pulled the same stunt in the past. I have to keep an eye on it—it does have very bad days—but overall, it’s been more supportive than most humans I know.
