Elizabeth of York was born #otd in 1466 at Westminster Palace to Edward IV & Elizabeth Woodville. She married Henry Tudor in 1486. Her surviving son was Henry VIII & her daughters, Margaret & Mary, both became queens. You can read all about her in my latest book.

#OTD 1567 Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, was murdered at Kirk o’ Field, Edinburgh. The house was blown up using gunpowder but he managed to escape the blast & flee into the garden where his assailants caught him & smothered him to death.

#TudorTweet #OTD In 1559, Elizabeth I was crowned Queen of England & Ireland at Westminster Abbey. At midday, Owen Oglethorpe, Bishop of Carlisle, conducted the service which was a blend of both Catholic & Reformist elements. The feasting afterwards lasted approximately 10 hours.

I finally have my hands on Elizabeth of York & the Birth of the Tudor Dynasty. It’s even more special as it’s dedicated to my dad. I chose this book for his dedication given the beautiful red cover and his love of LFC. ♥️

#OTD 1600 Charles I was born at Dunfermline Castle. His parents were James VI/I & Anna of Denmark. His early childhood was plagued by illness & he was largely kept out of public view but when his elder brother died he became heir to the throne. He reigned from 1625 to 1649.

#OTD 1501 Arthur, Prince of Wales married Katherine of Aragon at St Paul's Cathedral. Sadly, the marriage only lasted less than six months as Arthur died on 2nd April 1502. Katherine remained in England and later married Arthur's younger brother Henry VIII.

#OTD 1553 the trial of Lady Jane Grey & her husband Guildford Dudley began at the Guildhall in London. Jane was found guilty of having assumed the crown and was sentenced to be burned alive or beheaded on Tower Hill. Both were executed by beheading on 12 February 1554 aged 16/17.

#ElizabethofYork was a remarkable woman. Sadly, she is often overlooked in favour of her son Henry VIII and granddaughter Elizabeth I. This book focuses on Elizabeth's life from the court of her father Edward IV through her married life with Henry VII and her role as a mother.

#OTD in 1555 Elizabeth Cavendish was born at Chatsworth House. Her parents were Bess of Hardwick & Sir William Cavendish. She married Charles Stuart, younger son of Margaret Douglas & Matthew Stewart, the Earl & Countess of Lennox. Charles was the younger brother of Lord Darnley.

#OTD in 1554 Queen Mary I of England was married by proxy to Philip II of Spain. Mary's choice of bridegroom was not popular amongst her people as many felt England would become a vassal of Spain. Regardless, Mary went ahead and married the Spanish king. #thetudors

#OTD in 1486 Henry VII married Elizabeth of York at Westminster Abbey uniting the red rose of Lancaster and the white rose of York. It was a marriage built on mutual respect and love and four of their children survived infancy, Including Henry VIII, Queen Margaret of Scotland & Queen Mary of France.

OTD 1517 Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk was born. He married Frances Brandon & was the father of Jane, Katherine & Mary Grey. He was executed in February 1554 for his role in the Wyatt Rebellion, his daughter Jane was queen for 9 days & was executed just days before her father.

On this day in 1559 Queen Elizabeth I was crowned Queen of England at Westminster Abbey in a spectacular coronation ceremony that the whole of London rejoiced in. She reigned for 44 years

#OTD 1543 James V of Scotland was buried at Holyrood Abbey following his death on 14 December 1542. His death brought his 6 day old daughter to the throne as Mary, Queen of Scots. He was the last monarch to die in Scotland until 8 September 2022 when Elizabeth II died at Balmoral

#OTD in 1495 Jasper Tudor, Earl of Pembroke died. He was the son of Owen Tudor & Catherine of Valois making him the half-brother of Henry VI. He was uncle to Henry Tudor & was instrumental in helping him gain the throne as Henry VII. He married Catherine Woodville in 1485.
