Stranded on a moon where electrical power is impossible, pursued by giants, and threatened by human colonists stranded a century ago, Sanika allies herself with aliens that live in near silence. Impeded by selective mutism, she must find a way home, or make this world into one.

“Out of Draconia” by @almaalexander.bsky.social in @bcsmagazine.bsky.social is a masterful work of efficient world building and a mesmerizing fantasy story told at a human scale. Already recommended it to several friends and I think I’ll listen to it again with my kids next time we’re in the car

The route I take to bring my youngest to school involves a street called Tobacco Rd. Whenever we turn onto it, she makes sure the windows are rolled up and then tries to hold her breath.
