What kinds of things are you trying to customize? Might be able to help with the CSS -- people have done some pretty impressive things with it.

Ultimately, we face too much daily spam from non-paid users that make it hard for our small team (me, @baer.works) to do much of anything besides fight them off. So temporarily closing Free accounts is the easiest way to slow the tide a bit. I'm sure we'll open up Free accounts again in the future.
