Discussing historical and cultural contexts is essential for understanding the roots of several musical forms. The impact of systemic oppression on the Black experience is woven into the very fabric of many genres, and to omit that history would be to neglect an essential aspect of their meaning.

In states like Florida, policies such as the Stop WOKE Act present significant challenges to educators seeking to teach a comprehensive, culturally relevant curriculum. Censorship policies restrict the ability for educators to engage in discussions about race, identity, & historical events.

As we observe Black History Month, it’s crucial to reflect on the ways in which we teach & honor the diverse cultural legacies that have shaped our society. Black History is American History, & it’s important that we acknowledge how Black contributions have influenced the facets of American culture.
