I probably wouldn’t have chosen to visit here had I been in charge of the itinerary. But this was deeply thought provoking and I’m glad I visited

Inspirational visit to Corrie Ten Boom’s shop in Haarlem. Her story was amplified by the Billy Graham Association but I can’t help thinking she would have had a a very sharp rebuke for them today.

Today I learned that the name Amsterdam comes from the dam built around the river Amstel in around 1270 and that the canals were a 17th century plan to expand the rapidly growing city

What the Vikings would have seen when invading Northumberland (not my wife obviously). On the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam. Scenic voyage down the coast before turning port side across the North Sea around York.

Trying to imagine the conversation between James I and his stonemason when speccing out the tomb for his mother Mary Queen of Scots at Westminster Abbey. “Yes I’d like a red lion, on the body of a naked man, with a golden cross to cover his Crown Jewels!”

Does Gobeklitepe count? They are the oldest megaliths in the world and predate the Agricultural Revolution. #StandingStoneSunday

When are you coming to my church All Saint’s in Wing? We’ve got the largest Saxon arch in England, a seventh century crypt and I think we are the site of Bede’s mysterious Clovesho where Theodore of Tarsus brought all the Saxon bishops together. This name lives on as the benefice name of Cottesloe!

Found my Benefice Patron - Revd Dr Jonny Torrance - at our Chrism Mass at Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford this morning…

Albino joey on my morning run today…

My Palm Sunday stole which I bought from a Palestinian shop in The Old City in Jerusalem in 2014. It’s hard to imagine when would be an appropriate time to visit Jerusalem again.

This is the view out of my bedroom window right now. If I was Claude Monet I’d get out there and paint it because the depths and the colours change by the minute. But I’m not Claude Monet. I’m a time-pressed vicar. So you’ll have to make do with this photo that doesn’t really capture it.

A conversation after a funeral I took today has prompted me to purchase a book called Islamesque by Diana Darke. Was my Norman church in Stewkley built by Muslim masons shipped over by the Normans from their Sicily? I’ll let you know!

The gardens at Ascott House in Wing - The hedged avenues and the fragrances of the hyacinths reminded me of the Alhambra gardens in Granada. Spectacular today!

Been ordained 12 years but this is the first time I’ve ever bell ringing. Great fun (and quite complicated).

Keep on spotting intriguing stuff on and in my churches. Today I noticed this repurposed Saxon!?!? carving at St Giles Cheddington. What’s the story here? Is he a biblical character or a Wessex King I wonder?

Accompanied by a large barn owl on my morning run today. Along with a hare, several pheasants, a deer bouncing along and Red Kites. The fauna around here is truly incredible. I’ve never lived anywhere like it.

At the age of 49 for the first time today I trimmed a hedge with an electric chainsaw that my dad gave me. Embarrassed to say I immediately cut the wire and had to fix it. I’m incredulous that more people don’t lose arms and legs doing this garden duty, or at least a few fingers!

St Nicholas Cublington at our APCM on Wednesday night. Originally a Saxon village, the church and village relocated 500m up the hill to this site in the 1400s due to the plague. I love Cublington! Of a population of about 300 people nearly half the village joined us for Christmas. Not enough pews!

First mow of the year and my budget electric mower from Birmingham is inadequate. Doesn’t seem like the right time to switch to petrol. Smarter vicars than me would probably invest in a robot mower. But then the robot would enjoy the view whilst I was stuck doing emails!

BCP Morning Prayer at Wingrave with the faithful this morning

The Reformers couldn’t quite scrape away the painting of Mary and Gabriel at the Annunciation in our anchorite cell at St Peter & St Paul Wingrave. In 5 days it will be nine months to Christmas. My wife always went about 5 days over so I say we’re in Annunciation territory already!

Prayerful of the awful news coming out of Gaza on this St Joseph’s day. Picture is the flight of the Holy Family through Gaza to Egypt.

St Nicholas to the rescue! (I hadn’t realised until I found this picture a few minutes ago that the reason St N punched heretic Arius was actually for stealing his Santa Claus costume)
