According to my research, the biggest risk of plasma arcing in a microwave is that something may catch fire and damage the interior.

If you pay close attention and don't microwave gunpowder mixed with aluminum foil, you can probably just enjoy some cool science without ruining your appliance.

Once, many years ago, I tried microwaving some Nutella that was getting a little dry, and I forgot that there were still some bits of foil around the edge of the opening and I briefly made some spectacular plasma. I highly recommend this.
