Llangollen comes together to honour the fallen on Remembrance Sunday
Hundreds of residents and visitors came together on Sunday (November 9) to honour the fallen in the town's annual Remembrance Sunday service and parade. The service, led by Father Lee Taylor, began with prayers and the clear tones of the Last Post played by a bugler from the Llangollen Silver Band. The Exhortation was read by Mike Adam of the local branch of the Royal British Legion, followed by the traditional two-minute silence, the sounding of Reveille, and the reading out of the names of the fallen from both World Wars.

Wales announces mandatory bird housing to tackle avian influenza
Wales announces mandatory bird housing to tackle avian influenza
All poultry and captive bird keepers in Wales will be legally required to house their birds from Thursday 13 November, as the Welsh Government introduces new measures to tackle the growing threat of avian influenza. The decision follows a sharp rise in confirmed cases of the disease among both kept and wild birds across Great Britain. Avian influenza poses a serious risk to animal health, welfare, food production, and public health, officials said. From Thursday, all keepers with 50 or more birds of any species must house them. The same rule will apply to flocks of fewer than 50 birds if eggs or poultry products are sold or given away.

"Lead Members and officers are choosing what information comes to this committee instead of the committee recommendations being listened to"
“Lead Members and officers choosing what information comes to scrutiny committee” as minutes also challenged
The Employment, Business and Investment Scrutiny Committee saw a rare issue raised around minutes and accuracy, something that is usually just a nod through in agreement. At the same meeting a councillor claimed that Lead Members and officers choose what information councillors get, and that some of it has been delayed for several months despite repeated requests. The preamble to any meeting sees fire exits pointed out, apologies given and minutes approved in what is a bush bash bosh formality of how to run a meeting.

Senedd told of ‘smoke and mirrors’ after 20 years of ‘inaction’ over landfill stench
Regulators have been accused of presenting “flawed and misleading” evidence to a Senedd inquiry into a stench from a tip which has plagued people’s lives for nearly 20 years. Steve Gittins (above), a campaigner from Johnstown, Wrexham, submitted a petition calling for the revocation of Enovert’s environmental permit for the landfill site at the old Hafod quarry. Giving evidence to the Senedd’s petitions committee today Mr Gittins said people would accept nothing less than the site being closed after 20 years of “inaction”.

First look at new Rhosddu community centre and Scouts HQ
Plans are in for the new community centre on Prices Lane that will become the new Scouts and Guides Headquarters. The council are seeking approval to knock down the existing building on Prices Lane, which has been vacant since 2020. The building has remained shut when a roof failure forced it to close on safety grounds. A planning application submitted last week outlines the proposals to demolish and revdevelop the single-storey property, which dates back to the late 1970s.

Why next year’s Senedd votes won’t be counted overnight
Votes cast in the 2026 Senedd election will be counted during the daytime on Friday, 8 May, rather than overnight, following a new direction issued by Wales’ Electoral Management Board. Returning Officers across Wales have been instructed to begin counting between 9am and 11am on the day after polling, which takes place on Thursday, 7 May. The board said daytime counts have become standard practice in Wales, following similar arrangements for the 2021 Senedd election, the 2022 Local Government elections, and the 2024 Police and Crime Commissioner contests. A spokesperson said the approach would give more people the opportunity to follow the results as they are announced and ensure that election staff are well-rested.

Council Tax precept rise: How much are you prepared to pay for policing in North Wales?
Council Tax precept rise: How much are you prepared to pay for policing in North Wales?
How much money are you prepared to pay for policing across the region? That is the question being asked by the North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Andy Dunbobbin as a public consultation launches on a planned rise on precept levied through Council Tax. Around half the money for North Wales Police’s comes from the UK Government and the rest comes from Council Tax. The amount people pay for policing in their Council Tax depends on the Precept levied by Police and Crime Commissioners. Three increase options are currently under consideration, with members of the public having until December 19 to have their say on the plans.

Members of Senedd call for plastic-wrapped veg ban amid health fears
Alarming health warnings that microplastics are being found in human brains, blood and breastmilk sparked calls for a ban on single-use plastic on fresh fruit and vegetables. Rhys ab Owen, who sits as an independent, brought forward a cross-party proposal to ban the use of “unnecessary” single-use plastic packaging for fruit and veg. He told the Senedd: “Plastic packaging makes no difference whatsoever to the shelf life of over 20 fruits and vegetables… Simply put, plastic packaging, very often, is entirely wasteful, unnecessary and purposeless. We don’t need that packaging at all.”

“Lessons will be learned” says minister after baby killed in tragic dog attack
Wales’ deputy first minister Huw Irranca-Davies has vowed lessons will be learned after a nine-month-old boy was killed by a family dog in Monmouthshire. Speaking in the Senedd on Wednesday (November 5), Mr Irranca-Davies said he would “leave no stone unturned” to avoid a repeat of Sunday’s tragedy in Crossway, Rogiet. He told Senedd members: “We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and community affected by this tragic incident in Monmouthshire. “This is a deeply distressing case. You’ll understand it would be inappropriate for me to speculate while the investigations are ongoing.
