Wren (They/them)

Queer romantasy author, elf enjoyer, and wife guy.
The worst thing a romance can do give the couple no meaningful reason to like each other besides the fact that they're both pretty and nice.
Yeah pretty and nice is probably enough for at least a casual relationship IRL, but it's not a STORY. At least shake the jar they're in so they adhere.

wife: I wonder what wildlife would be in this setting
me: In a desert? Rodents and reptiles and invertebrates. Probably some cool birds of prey
wife: *gasp* my noble character should have a bird. it's spoiled. he flies it every night
me: has it ever dropped a live snake on him
wife: well it has NOW

LRP: I am SO excited for this anthology though I'm not sure I'll get to my ARC super quickly lmao. I love so many of the featured authors.

First read of the 2026! Voyage of the Damned by Frances White, pictured with the old man who got mad I was reading in the living room instead of honoring his request for cuddle time.
This book was a roller coaster. Good lord. Loved every character in it, too.

Finally out of my day job contract for the year! Time for a little update;
My off season is usually my writing time, but as I'm dealing with a family matter I am also living partially with my mother, and for reasons I won't get into here, that means I only have so much energy at the end of the day.

I think I'm just burnt out for Fall Colours Season at work (gods help me yes this is a thing in my industry) but every book I'm trying to read right now feels like pulling teeth.

day job: made me move to a critically unaffordable town. eight hours a day. tourists. workplace safety violations. no benefits. paid cashier wage to do the jobs of five people. uncomfortable uniform.
writing: today i will hurt an elf for fun :)

Anyway Dymitr from When Among Crows/To Clutch a Razor by Veronica Roth is trans in my heart because I cannot read about his family's failure to accept him as he is without weeping.
📖"But they don't love him, Niko thinks. Because if love doesn't allow change, then what the fuck is that love worth?"🏳️‍⚧️

They should let you leave work early if your heart isn't in it and you have a really good half-read book at home.

I can't show you damn near any of it because of spoilers and because I don't want to give you flash fiction before you meet the characters properly, but I'm doing a smut-tember challenge for my own enjoyment/practice and I'm so giddy about how well Nico's getting treated today 🤭

Did a little write up about the three works I kind of have going on and wanted to share here as well.

I wanna reflect on the concept of works being "original" vs "derivative," not in the IP sense but as a qualitative judgement
I have said before that film school saved my craft but killed my creativity. I spent every creative moment for 5 years desperately trying to be "original" but also "important"

I'm gonna tell my grand-nieces and nephews that this was Devwin and Nico

I have a BFA in film but specialized heavily in screenwriting. Film school built my craft but killed my creativity - I needed to get back into fanfiction and reading lots to be ready to write properly.
Where did you really learn to write? Did you go through a BFA program? The school of fanfiction? Tell me where you really started to hone your craft! #WritingPrompt

I took my longest break from writing in three months and got so motivated to go back only to be subject to two job interviews on Friday that I have to prep sample programs for and that's why having to work for a living is homophobic.

Fen screams and Nico takes care of it, but it needs be said that Fen would have taken care of it if Nico hadn't swooped in instantly. He has to overreact for a second to process a startle emotionally but Nico swooped in the instant there was a yelp with a "is this arachnid bothering you, king?"
Who of your characters screams that there's a spider in the room, and who has to take care of it? #WritingPrompt

(I'm not doing real book promotion until I'm further into editing BUT I will throw picrews at the problem so that this account isn't blank)
These are Nico and Devwin, protagonists of my debut novel tentatively called The Sights Unseen. A sailor and a prince! Or so it seems... 😌

Hello! My name is Wren and I write books! I am a queer, genderfluid author of queer romantasy and certifiably Normal About Elves TM.
I'm trying to establish a bit of a presence under my pen name as I'm finishing a draft of what will hopefully be my debut novel, about two princes, each with a secret.
