Sharing a little snippet of something short I’m working on and hoping to post this coming weekend!

🔞 sports AU, Lan Zhan is out of control
Bitterness floods Lan Zhan’s mouth. He storms off the field, the soles of his boots gouging muddy holes in the turf; unnoticed by his teammates, by his coach, by Wei Ying. Anger roils in the pit of his stomach, sharp-edged and uncontainable, a dormant volcano waiting to erupt. It takes a monumental effort to force himself to be patient. He’d stolen two more pairs of Wei Ying’s sweaty underwear following the two intervening defeats, bringing his total number of illicit trophies to three. What was a fourth, really? He doesn’t have anything more to lose. In fact, he already knows Wei Ying’s post-match routine like the back of his hand. Wei Ying typically hangs around in the locker room, waiting for his teammates to leave so he can treat himself to a long, deserved shower. And that’s when Lan Zhan would make his move.

Luo Qingyang takes Lan Zhan’s hand and clutches it tightly. “Xiao-Lan. What do you miss most about home?” “People here haven’t always been nice,” Lan Zhan hears himself saying. “They ask strange questions, make inaccurate assumptions.” “Ah,” Luo Qingyang says. A look of pensive commiseration settles over her expression; an ancient, shapeless sort of anguish. “I know exactly what you mean. People who can’t see beyond their own worldview. They fall back on stereotypes because it’s the only thing they know.” She turns her gaze downward, chewing on the corner of her lip. “The year I arrived, there were only six Asian students in my cohort. And the way people spoke to us…” She draws a shaky breath. “Classmates would speak to us extra loudly and slowly, and wrinkle their noses if we happened to be eating anything in common areas. But when I complained about it to my roommate, she reminded me that other non-Asian minorities faced far worse discrimination. She had me convinced that I was being too sensitive. “I cried on the phone to my sister every day, to the point where she got worried for me and wanted to tell our parents. That was my wake-up call. My mum and dad are getting on in age, and they had sent me off at the airport with hope shining in their eyes. I couldn’t let them know what was really happening to me. I made up my mind to work as hard as I could, and to make sure I always appeared happy every time I spoke to them. It was the least I could do to repay them after how much they’d sacrificed for me.” Her voice hitches, and Lan Zhan automatically squeezes her fingers tightly in response. Her pain seems to grow and fill the spaces between them; magnified, incandescent, and alive. Lan Zhan imagines it travelling from her body to his, a jagged golden thread doggedly punching through muscle and bone and viscera. In his mind’s eye, he sees her hugging her elderly parents goodbye at the departure gates, much like how he’d hugged his own uncle upon leaving. “English is a shield,” Luo Qingyang continues, slow and heavy. There are no tears in her eyes, only a desolate, faraway steeliness. “I speak it only to protect my heart and thoughts. The better I speak it, the less people ask questions, and the less they ask questions, the less they have that can be sharpened and used against me.”

“So, Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying says, light and casual. He shuffles toward the stove to check on the curry they had earlier left simmering there, staring determinedly into the pot as if he might see his own fortune in its depths. “What sort of guys do you like? Do you, ah, have a type? Someone tall, someone intellectual, someone with a bodybuilder’s physique, someone who can paint, cure cancer, or speak ten different languages? Just asking as a buddy would. In case you ever need my help to set you up with someone in the future. After all, what are best friends for?” I promised myself that I’d only speak my heart to you from now on. If I do this, then I do so wholeheartedly, without regret. Wei Ying’s tone is deceptively cheery, brimming with a stilted, exaggerated playfulness, but Lan Zhan is already aware that he has already waited too long, and there is far too much at stake now for him to attempt to change the subject, to decline to answer, or even to deflect it with a joke of his own. “The man I love is someone who is always in my thoughts. He is the one who makes me smile, who understands my heart as well as his own, who has been and will be there with me through everything, and who is a friend to me, first and foremost.” The admission seems to roar through him, sending a surge of heat sweeping through his entire body in its wake. Lan Zhan takes a slow, considering breath, fighting the compulsion to fidget. He can feel his ears burning, his stomach flipping, his cock inexplicably stiffening in his joggers. Still, it is not enough, there is still far more to be said; he needs to elaborate, to prove, to affirm — But Wei Ying’s face splits into a shaky grin. “Ah. Wow. That’s — well, that’s great. Duly noted. I mean. I’m sure we’d be able to find plenty of candidates in our friend group who’d love to get with you, and who’d be able to make you laugh, and understand you, and so on.”

Seeing as you haven’t had it, I think that’s something that we ought to remedy right now, don’t you agree?” And at that, Lan Zhan had turned away. Annoyed at himself for rising to the bait, and worse, for possibly inciting Wei Ying to set him up for meaningless sex with someone else. No, actually. The worst thing, to Lan Zhan, was the possibility that Wei Ying might one day get to experience “fucking amazing” sex with someone that he actually did care deeply about. Wei Ying and this imaginary person would be doing it all the time, the heat and stench of their pheromones melting and seeping into every interaction, every breath, every waking moment. And Lan Zhan would be forced to observe them tolerating his presence in public, knowing that the moment he was out of their sight, they would immediately turn their gazes and hands back upon each other, as if he had never been there at all. An indescribable, formless hatred had welled up in him then, for this person who as of yet didn’t exist, but who would indisputably be bound to Wei Ying for a long time, likely the rest of their lives.

Lan Zhan ends up saying the first thing that comes to his mind. “Ge, in university, is it common for a person to visit someone else’s dorm room at night?” He stops, uncertain as to how to continue, and uncomfortably aware that he has already given too much away. “Visit?” His brother laughs a little, and Lan Zhan pictures him visibly relaxing over the line. “Is that what they call it nowadays? Yes, Ah Zhan, it’s very common. A lot of people do it.” He doesn’t understand. Lan Zhan doesn’t know whether to be more dismayed or relieved at this. His brother had graduated from an Ivy League college three years ago, and while they’ve never really broached the subject of each other’s private lives before, Lan Zhan wouldn’t be surprised if he found out that his brother had been, in fact, the sort of person who regularly visited his classmates’ dorm rooms for some sort of gratification or other. “Even casually? Especially when they have no intention of…?” “Ah Zhan,” his brother sighs. There’s a short pause, in which Lan Zhan knows he is weighing his words, trying to put his thoughts across as delicately as possible. “Look, I hope you’re not being pressured by anyone into doing anything you don’t want to do. It’s perfectly all right if you’re not ready, or if you don’t want to participate. This — lifestyle — it’s not for everyone, and that’s fine.” “I know.” Lan Zhan closes his eyes. He leans back against the headboard, savouring the simple comfort of hearing his brother’s voice. “I thought — well. I just wanted to ask.” Another pause. Lan Zhan allows himself to be lulled into it, even as he is conscious of his brother silently reflecting on the train of their conversation, putting two and two together. As such, he’s only mildly surprised when his brother says, “I see. I hope you’re staying safe, at the very least.”

Random WIP from my drafts — college AU, Lan Zhan has stormed off, Upset™️ because he thinks Wei Ying and Mianmian are a couple
It’s someone’s dorm room. Lan Zhan doesn’t know whose it is, only that all the lights have been switched off, and the furniture has been pushed back against the walls. At least thirty people are spinning and gyrating and whooping within the expanse of floor in the middle, beer bottles and disposable cups raised high above their heads. Lan Zhan pushes his way into the centre of the sweaty thicket and pauses, momentarily disoriented. The music is so loud that he can barely hear his own thoughts, which, he decides on the spur of the moment, is probably for the best. He lifts his arms into the air and begins to dance. No one is watching him. All around him are twisting limbs and stomping feet, faces contorted in the rapture of being young and fearless and alive. He moves, anonymous and unobserved, effortlessly made one with the music and the lights and the swaying bodies, his mind blissfully blank. Someone presses a plastic cup into his hand. He lifts it to his nose, doing his best not to gag at the fumes. But before he can even think about taking a drink, someone else bumps into him from behind, and the cup goes flying. Lan Zhan watches with detached fascination as it bursts apart on the dance floor and showers a girl’s stockinged legs with its contents. Her ensuing screech seems to ricochet off the ceiling before melting away into the bars of the next song, an unintentionally seamless transition.

Candour has never been Lan Zhan’s strong suit. He thinks ruefully of his younger self: hovering at the fringes of various social groups, snatches of excited conversations washing over his consciousness like forgotten confetti. Aloof yet hyper-aware; quietly hoping to be extended an invitation by a kind voice, while simultaneously concerned with the hidden implications of receiving one. He would be expected to partake, to abandon himself to the pomp and revelry, to become one with the staggering magnitude of his desire. And in doing so, he would be exposing the soft underbelly of his true self to the eyes of everyone, to the point of no return. But if his relationship with Wei Ying has taught him anything, it’s that unconditional devotion is its own sort of freedom: that he may finally be his true self around the one who loves him, without fear of judgement and ridicule. That he would be held fast and tight and close. That his flaws would always be accepted, his quirks celebrated, his kinks entertained. Nothing will ever make me stop loving you, Wei Ying had said to him, once. So really, what does he have to lose, especially now?
