Matrix theory

James Joseph Sylvester introduced the term matrix in 1850, using the Latin sense of “womb” or “source” to describe an array that gives birth to determinants.

In 1960 NW Ontario we had a teacher raised in British Columbia who encouraged us to /ʍ/ our whats, whens, & wheres but it was foreign to my generation. My mother used it for emphasis but eventually stopped.
