Retro nerd. He/Him.
Oooh, good call, 4 characters, a stamina mechanic, and instant deathtraps? Is there an option to cover up Demona's boobs? Otherwise it's even less YouTube-friendly

If you're not familiar with the Sega ST-V, I wrote a blog post about it a few years back: nicole.express/2021/segason... Long story short, it's an arcade system based on Saturn hardware that takes interchangeable cartridges rather than CDs.
The Solid State Saturn: Sega ST-V!
I recently did a review of the Satiator, a device that lets you use an SD card to run games on the Sega Saturn. It’s pretty great. However, it had one flaw: ...

Crime Crackers. I know there's been a couple of attempts, I wonder if being a launch game makes it more architecturally weird?

You know, if I had a nickel for every time a Bungie game started you with a round missing in a weapon because it got fired in the preceding cutscene, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

Oh boy, I'm trying to imagine playing a fighter on the Dead Flesh keyboard of the original.

If you'll forgive me, the original composer uploaded a top quality recording of it last year.

I had the ST version and remember the theme tune. I assume it also has the glitch where if you drop the car to neutral it keeps its current speed forever and can't skid?

My local arcade (Heart of Gaming, South London) has one in decent nick and it's got such an aesthetic.

We always think of so much of old stuff as being pre-baked to save compute, but "assemble it on the fly" saves so much space. I'm reminded of how the Amiga does its "insert disk" animation as vectors rather than a pre-made animation.

I've been doing some retro stuff so you don't need to pay if you don't want to, and I feel it comes down to *time*. I am happier recommending a jank but cool shooter than I am a below-average RPG.

I've been working on a vid of all the games I had for my Amiga, and I'm adopting one-liners rather than scores. So far we have "try it", "play elsewhere", and "still great".

A janky port will teach you a half-dozen things about the target platform and budget restrictions.

Except the one in Dead Space 2, which gets me *every time*.

The reverse is true of the sequel, but that was 1996 so I can see why they went AGA first. Yes I have been playing all my old disks alphabetically recently for a vid.

This leads to a weird look when games were clearly made for the ECS then an AGA version was quickly put out, the latter seeming almost... garish? Like Chaos Engine here, why are the mud men, who are made of mud, now blueberry-flavoured? It's a muted steampunk world, I think the ECS looks better.

How dare you, also yes. Art made with the palette in mind usually looks pretty good (Chaos Engine), anything downsampled less so (Monkey Island 2).

A friend had an early model, which we thought was overheating (maybe the heat made a marginal drive skip more?) so we put it on a pot stand which seemed to help, maybe.

Did have the delightful Namco solenoid guns, though I gather keeping them working is a labour.

If you can "find" the PC version it doesn't need too much encouragement to run.
